What is the right way to load a dumpster?
Load a dumpster heavy items first, flat on the floor and spread evenly front to back. Break down furniture, stand flat pieces upright, then fill gaps with loose debris. Keep everything level with or below the top rim, and keep the rear door clear so it closes and latches.
- Plan the load: what is heavy, what is bulky, what is loose.
- Heavy and flat items go in first, spread across the floor.
- Break down furniture and cabinets; stack boards and panels on edge.
- Fill gaps with bags and small debris.
- Stop at the rim. Nothing sticks up or out.
- Tarp the load before rain and at night.
What is the dumpster fill line?
The fill line is the top rim of the dumpster for light debris and halfway up the walls for heavy debris such as concrete, dirt and brick. Texas law requires loads to be secured on the road, so we can't haul an overfilled bin. An overfilled bin gets a $125 trip fee and must be leveled before transport.
Texas Transportation Code §725.021 requires a vehicle's load to be secured so it can't blow or spill off. Read Chapter 725.
How do I keep the dumpster under the weight limit?
Keep a dumpster under its weight limit by keeping heavy debris out of the 20, 30 and 40-yard sizes, covering the load before rain, and estimating heavy materials before you load. Each size page shows a worked weight example.
Loading questions
Can I load debris above the top of the dumpster?
Debris must stay level with the top rim. An overfilled bin can't legally travel, so the driver can't haul it, a $125 trip fee applies, and the excess has to come out first.
How do I stop neighbors from using my dumpster?
Keep the dumpster in view, cover it with a tarp at night and ask us about placement close to the house. Anything a neighbor adds is weighed on your ticket.
Should I break down furniture before loading?
Breaking down furniture frees a lot of space. Remove legs, take apart bed frames and stack flat pieces upright to fill gaps.
Where should the heaviest items go?
Load the heaviest items first, flat on the floor and spread evenly front to back. Uneven loads are harder to lift onto the truck safely.
Need a hand choosing the size?
The right size makes loading easy and keeps the bill at the quote.
