What size dumpster do you need for roofing?

For roofing work, the table matches the job to a size. Up to 12 squares, 1 layer usually fits a 15-yard. Every size includes 7 days and 2 to 6 tons, and weight over that is $75 per ton by the exact pound.

Roof sizeTypical sizeWhy
Up to 12 squares, 1 layer15-yardAbout 1.4 tons at 240 lb/square
13–25 squares, 1 layer20-yardUp to about 3 tons; the 20-yard includes 3
26–33 squares, 1 layer30-yardUp to about 4 tons; the 30-yard includes 4
Any roof, 2 layersTwo hauls or a swapDouble the weight per square
Typical fits; weight decides the bill. Compare sizes.

How much will your roofing debris weigh?

If your shingles weigh 80 lb per bundle and a square takes 3 bundles, one square weighs 240 lb. 25 squares × 240 lb = 6,000 lb = 3 tons, the full allowance of a 20-yard. EPA's national average for loose roofing is about 731 lb per cubic yard. Read your own bundle weight on the wrapper.

Where should the dumpster go for roofing work?

Set the dumpster close to the roof edge where the crew drops debris, on the driveway and clear of power lines. Tarp shingle loads before rain; wet debris weighs more.

For roofing jobs, as on every delivery, our drivers set the bin on wooden boards to protect concrete and asphalt. A $125 trip fee applies if the bin can't be placed because of cars, wires or locked gates. Placement guide.

Which rules apply to roofing debris?

OSHA 29 CFR 1926.252(a) requires an enclosed chute when debris is dropped more than 20 feet outside the exterior walls of a building. Most single-story and two-story roofs drop less than that; tall homes may need a chute.

General information, not legal advice. Confirm with your city, HOA or permit office.

What if the job runs long or the bin fills early?

Book the dumpster the day before the tear-off so it is on site when the crew arrives. If the first bin fills, a swap is billed as a new flat-rate rental.

Roofing dumpster questions

How many squares fit in a 20-yard dumpster?

By weight, about 25 squares of one-layer asphalt shingles at 240 lb per square fill the 3-ton allowance of a 20-yard. Heavier shingles mean fewer squares.

Can I put roof decking in with the shingles?

Decking, felt, flashing and nails can go in with the shingles. They add weight, so leave margin under the included tons.

Do you deliver before the roofing crew arrives?

Book by 3 PM for next-day delivery between 7 AM–5 PM. Most roofers book the day before the tear-off.

What if it rains on my shingle load?

Water adds weight that gets billed at the scale. Tarp the load when rain is forecast.
